IIT Kharagpur Climbs to Fourth Place Among India's Top Educational Institutes
Kolkata, June 7 - The Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, has made significant strides in the global academic arena, climbing 49 places to now rank fourth among higher educational institutes in India and 222nd globally. This achievement is highlighted in the latest QS World University Rankings 2025. IIT Kharagpur now ranks as the third-best among the IITs and the fourth-best educational institute in the country, showcasing its excellence and commitment to high-quality education and research.

IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi have also shown remarkable improvements in their global standings. IIT Bombay has ascended to the 118th position, up by 31 ranks from the previous year, while IIT Delhi has surged by 47 points to secure the 150th position globally. This places both institutions among the top 150 higher educational institutes worldwide. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues its legacy by retaining the top rank globally for the 13th consecutive time.
The QS World University Rankings 2025 by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) evaluated a comprehensive list of 1,503 universities from across the globe, assessing a total of 5,663 institutions. These rankings are designed to project university performance for the upcoming academic year, hence they are named for the following year. IIT Kharagpur excelled in several parameters including international research network, sustainability, and citations per faculty.
Prof V.K. Tewari, Director of IIT Kharagpur, expressed pride in the institute's performance and its role in upholding India's commitment to globalisation through technological innovation. "The institute has upheld the nation's resolve to excel in standards of globalisation with artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing systems and transportation, 5G network, safety engineering and analytics, quality and reliability, affordable healthcare, precision agriculture, food nutrition, and smart infrastructure," he stated.
As an institute of eminence, IIT Kharagpur is at the forefront of fostering innovation and technological pursuits. Its initiatives include developing technological research parks, centres of excellence, start-up incubators, lab-to-market products, and nano missions. These efforts are instrumental in contributing towards an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-reliant India).
Prof Tewari further emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities in digital economy spaces and biomedical engineering to foster technological expansions that create human-machine synergy. This approach not only enhances educational standards but also contributes significantly to research and development in critical areas.
The achievements of IIT Kharagpur and other leading Indian institutes in the QS World University Rankings 2025 reflect India's growing influence and reputation in the global educational landscape. Through continuous improvement and innovation, these institutions are setting new benchmarks for excellence in higher education.
