IIT Guwahati Takes on Study to Unravel Dibrugarh Artificial Flooding Causes

The Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways has announced that IIT-Guwahati will investigate the causes of artificial flooding in Assam’s Dibrugarh city. Based on their findings, a comprehensive master plan will be developed to address the issue. The city has experienced severe artificial floods this year, with some areas still submerged.

IIT Guwahati Examines Dibrugarh Floods

During his visit to the Naliapool area, the minister inspected the drainage and sewerage systems. He urged local authorities to pool their efforts, resources, and knowledge to devise a sustainable solution to the waterlogging problem. The minister emphasised the importance of addressing issues such as encroachment to find a lasting resolution.

Focus on Sustainable Solutions

Speaking on the occasion, Sonowal stated, "The artificial flood in Dibrugarh is a cause of concern and we must find a solution that is economically prudent, ecologically viable and environmentally sustainable." He highlighted that IIT-Guwahati's study would identify the root causes of the flooding, which has disrupted life in Dibrugarh.

Once the causes are identified, a team of experts will draft a master plan and present it to the government for implementation. "We will ensure that this is executed in letter and spirit," Sonowal added. He also called on civic bodies to take action against anyone found violating laws related to water management.

Immediate Actions Required

Following his inspection visit, the Union Minister instructed officials to act swiftly to bring relief to the public. He stressed the need for civic bodies to address encroachment issues and expedite efforts towards finding a permanent solution. Incorporating expert opinions and suggestions into their plans was also emphasised.

Sonowal, who represents Dibrugarh as an MP, contacted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma regarding the situation. An official statement mentioned that local authorities must hedge all efforts to chalk out a pragmatic solution to the waterlogging problem.

The minister's visit underscores the urgency of addressing artificial flooding in Dibrugarh. By involving IIT-Guwahati and other experts, the government aims to develop an effective strategy to mitigate future floods.
