IIT Baba Held In Jaipur Hotel Over Cannabis Possession – Here’s What Happened

Abhay Singh, widely known as IIT Baba, was detained by Jaipur Police on Monday under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, according to a Network 18 report. The authorities found cannabis in his possession, but since the quantity was below the legal limit, he was released on bail soon after.

The police detained IIT Baba from Hotel Park Prime before releasing him. While officials stated they were responding to an emergency call about a young man attempting suicide at the hotel, some reports suggest that the raid on Singh's room may have had other motives. However, the source of the police tip-off remains unknown.

The Shiprapath Police Station officers briefly held Singh at the hotel. According to the police, they received information from the control room about a suicide attempt by a young man named Abhay Singh at the Riddhi Siddhi Park Classic Hotel. When they arrived, they found IIT Baba, who admitted to consuming cannabis.

Speaking to IANS, IPS officer Aditya Kakre from Mansarovar Police Station said that the suicide report has not been confirmed, and it is too soon to comment on it. He did confirm that cannabis was recovered from Singh, but due to its small quantity, he was released on bail.

Kakre also mentioned that a doctor had alerted the police about IIT Baba's presence at the hotel. A subsequent search led to the discovery of two grams of cannabis. Singh was taken to the police station but was released on bail shortly after.

As he left the hotel, IIT Baba surprised many by wishing a police officer a happy birthday. He later expressed confusion over why the police had entered his room. Refuting the allegations, he remarked that if arrests were made for such actions, many more people would face legal consequences.

In an interview with News18 India, IIT Baba said, "I smoke cannabis, but I'm not the only one - many sadhus consume it. If the police consider it a crime, so be it."

Addressing the viral spread of false reports, he said, "There are three or four fake news stories: one about suicide, another about my detention. The only truth is that I was granted bail immediately."

IIT Baba recently made headlines after alleging an assault during a televised debate. The incident reportedly took place at a private news channel in Noida on Friday. According to his police complaint, individuals in saffron robes entered the newsroom and attacked him with sticks. Following the alleged assault, he staged a protest outside the Sector 126 police outpost but ended it after police intervention and assurances.
