They have previously secured victories against cricketing giants such as Pakistan (in 1999), India (in 2007), and England (in 2015), showcasing their potential to make an impact when it matters most. It is expected that both country's players would be highly confident after having defeated Sri Lanka in their warm-up game and would continue in the same form.
In the ODI World Cup history so far, Afghanistan has played 15 times and has won only 1 match against Scotland in 2015. As per a report in Sports Tiger, Afghanistan won 3 out 11 ODI matches in 2023. On the other hand, Sri Lanka had a successful campaign in the Asia Cup 2023, until the tournament's final under the leadership of Dasun Shanaka. However, they faced defeat in the final against India.
In the warm-up matches leading up to the ICC World Cup, Sri Lanka faced some challenges as they couldn't manage to perform at their best, losing both of their warm-up games.
