IAF Chief Amar Preet Singh Highlights Importance of Operational Capability and Jointness

Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, newly appointed as the Chief of Air Staff, has urged top air warriors to enhance unity and collaboration. His primary focus is on strengthening the combat capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF). Air Chief Marshal Singh, a seasoned fighter pilot with over 5,000 flying hours, succeeded Air Chief Marshal V R Chaudhari, who retired after leading the force for three years.

IAF Chief Stresses Operational Readiness and Jointness

Air Chief Marshal Singh emphasised the importance of maintaining operational readiness and vigilance in his address to the IAF. He highlighted the need for the IAF to remain a credible deterrent. Before assuming his current role, he served as the Vice Chief of the IAF. He stressed nurturing leadership and enhancing cohesion among commanders to build a strong, capable, and self-reliant IAF.

Focus on Jointness and Modernisation

His emphasis on jointness aligns with the government's theatreisation initiative aimed at enhancing synergy among the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Air Chief Marshal Singh expressed confidence in air warriors' dedication to maintaining high operational capability. He urged them to uphold traditions and ensure they "touch the sky with glory" amid uncertain geopolitical conditions.

As Chief of Air Staff, his priorities include procuring new fighter fleets and advancing modernisation efforts. These efforts are crucial given evolving national security challenges, including ongoing tensions along the eastern Ladakh border with China. Another key task is focusing on theatreisation as part of ambitious reform initiatives by the government.

Distinguished Career and Achievements

Born on October 27, 1964, Air Chief Marshal Singh was commissioned into the IAF's fighter pilot stream in December 1984. His nearly 40-year career includes various command, staff, instructional, and foreign roles. An alumnus of prestigious defence institutions, he is a qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot with extensive experience on fixed and rotary-wing aircraft.

He has commanded an operational fighter squadron and a frontline air base. As a test pilot, he led the MiG-29 upgrade project in Moscow and directed flight tests for the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas at the National Flight Test Centre. He assumes leadership amid concerns over delays in delivering LCA Tejas-Mark 1A by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL).

Leadership Roles and Recognition

Air Chief Marshal Singh has held significant staff roles such as Air Defence Commander at South Western Air Command and Senior Air Staff Officer at Eastern Air Command. Before becoming Vice Chief of Air Staff last February, he was Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Air Command. A recipient of prestigious service medals, he is known for his fitness enthusiasm and love for squash.

In his remarks, he expressed gratitude for air veterans' vision and credited IAF's success to their leadership. He conveyed honour and privilege in leading the IAF, acknowledging their dynamic contributions.
