Hydrogen Train: Railway To Roll Out India's First Water-Driven Trains Soon – Routes, Speed & Features

Indian Railways, one of the largest rail networks globally, continues to modernize by introducing upgraded trains and new services. Among these advancements, the Vande Bharat Express has already set a benchmark in efficiency. Now, Indian Railways is preparing to launch a revolutionary "water-powered" train that operates without traditional diesel or electricity, taking a bold step towards a sustainable future. Here's an overview of the routes, speed, and unique features of this upcoming hydrogen-powered train. In

Trains Powered by Water, Not Fuel or Electricity

First Hydrogen Train

Tracing the evolution of Indian Railways, it began with steam engines and progressed to coal, followed by diesel-powered engines, which-while effective-contributed to pollution. The current electric trains rely on coal-powered electricity generation. The forthcoming hydrogen train marks a significant shift by using water, setting a new milestone in eco-friendly rail travel.

India's First Hydrogen-Powered Train

This will be India's first train powered by water, utilizing advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology. A pilot project is expected to launch soon, with the train requiring around 40,000 liters of water per hour. Specialized storage facilities are being set up to support this new fuel source, which combines hydrogen with oxygen to generate electricity.

India's First Hydrogen Train Launch

The pilot project for India's first hydrogen train is slated to begin operations in December 2024.

35 Hydrogen Trains Across the Country

Indian Railways plans to roll out as many as 35 hydrogen-powered trains nationwide. Installation of hydrogen fuel cells and supporting infrastructure is already underway, and designs for hydrogen production plants have been approved. The estimated cost for each hydrogen train is approximately Rs 80 crore, according to railway spokesperson Dilip Kumar.

Key Features of the Hydrogen Train

This hydrogen-powered train will produce electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen in fuel cells, emitting only steam and water, unlike conventional diesel engines. It is also designed to be 60% quieter than diesel trains, with comparable speed and capacity.

Proposed Routes for the First Hydrogen Train

The initial route for the hydrogen train is expected to be the 90-kilometre Jind-Sonipat line in Haryana. Other potential routes being evaluated comprise the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Kalka-Shimla Railway, Matheran Railway, Kangra Valley Railway, Bilimora-Waghai Railway, and the Marwar-Deogarh Madariya lines.

Speed and Range

The hydrogen train is expected to reach speeds of up to 140 km/h, with a single run covering up to 1,000 kilometers on one tank.

With the launch of this hydrogen-powered train, Indian Railways is not only embracing innovation but also paving the way for a cleaner and greener future in rail transportation.
