Maharashtra CM Fadnavis Reassures Citizens Amid Human Metapneumovirus Cases and Upcoming Advisory
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has urged citizens not to panic following the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in some states. He assured that a detailed advisory will soon be released. A two-month-old boy in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and two individuals in Karnataka have been diagnosed with HMPV. Both states share borders with Maharashtra.

The Union health ministry has highlighted that HMPV is not new and circulates globally, including in India. Cases linked to respiratory illnesses from this virus have been reported worldwide. Maharashtra's health minister, Prakash Abitkar, echoed the sentiment of calm, stating that necessary measures are being implemented across the state's health services.
Health Advisory and Measures
A notification from the state health department described HMPV as a respiratory virus affecting people of all ages. It can cause infections in both upper and lower respiratory tracts. The virus is seasonal, appearing mainly in winter and summer. Citizens are advised to cover their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing and to wash hands frequently.
In Pune, the Municipal Corporation has prepared 50 isolation beds and five ICU beds at Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital as a precautionary step. Other hospitals, both civic and private, have been instructed to be ready for emergencies. This preparation aims to ensure swift responses if more cases arise.
Government Response and Public Guidance
CM Fadnavis stated that the situation is being closely monitored by both state and Union health officials. He mentioned that "Citizens must not panic," reassuring that an advisory will be reissued soon. The government is actively assessing the situation to provide timely updates.
The Union health ministry continues to monitor the situation closely. Health minister Prakash Abitkar mentioned that a meeting will be held soon to discuss further actions. He advised people to follow guidelines issued by health authorities to prevent the spread of HMPV.
The advisory also recommends staying away from public places if experiencing symptoms like fever or cough. Using handkerchiefs or tissues when sneezing and maintaining hygiene with soap or sanitizers are crucial preventive measures. These steps aim to reduce transmission risk among the population.
The state's proactive approach includes issuing instructions to all district-level health sections and hospitals. This ensures readiness across Maharashtra's healthcare system to manage potential outbreaks effectively. The collaboration between state and Union health departments underscores the importance of coordinated efforts in addressing public health concerns.
Efforts by local authorities, such as those by Pune Municipal Corporation, demonstrate preparedness at various levels. By allocating resources like isolation beds, they aim to mitigate any potential impact of HMPV on public health services. Such measures reflect a commitment to safeguarding community well-being amidst emerging health challenges.
