HRTC Driver's Suicide Raises Concerns Over Domestic Violence and Workplace Harassment Allegations

A driver from the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), Sanjay Kumar, allegedly took his own life after consuming poison. Authorities revealed that Kumar was experiencing domestic violence at home. A video surfaced on January 13, where Kumar accused the local unit management of harassment and misconduct before his death.

HRTC Drivers Suicide Linked to Domestic Violence

In November 2022, Kumar had taken medical leave due to domestic violence issues. He had informed the regional manager in Kullu about injuries inflicted by his wife and son. An FIR was filed regarding this incident, according to HRTC Managing Director Rohan Chand Thakur.

Domestic Violence and Workplace Allegations

Kumar's leave request dated January 7, 2025, also cited domestic violence as the reason. This indicated ongoing domestic issues. The HRTC's preliminary inquiry into his death found that Kumar had faced disciplinary actions previously for negligent driving and disobedience.

The inquiry revealed that on January 7, Kumar applied for a five-day leave at the bus stand but left without approval. The report highlighted that he had been paid his salary up to December 2024, contradicting his claims in the video of salary being withheld for four months.

Inquiry Findings and Statements

Kumar's video alleged harassment by a senior official who supposedly withheld his salary. However, the inquiry confirmed that he received payments till December 2024. This discrepancy raised questions about the claims made in the video.

HRTC's investigation into Kumar's suicide also noted previous disciplinary actions against him. These included negligent driving and disobedience, which might have contributed to his distress alongside personal issues.

The situation underscores the complexity of workplace and personal challenges faced by employees. It highlights the need for support systems to address such issues effectively within organisations.
