A routine weekly auction in Haryana turned into a headline grabbing event when the registration number HR88B8888 was sold for a staggering Rs 1.17 crore. The final bid, locked at 5 pm on Wednesday, has now made it the most expensive car number plate ever purchased in India.

The excitement built throughout the day as bidders competed intensely for the rare combination of digits that many believe carries strong symbolic appeal.

How Haryana's VIP Number Plate Auction Works

Haryana conducts online auctions every week for fancy or VIP registration numbers. Applications stay open from Friday 5 pm until Monday 9 am. Bidders then participate in the live auction until Wednesday 5 pm on the official fancy.parivahan.gov.in portal.

This week, HR88B8888 attracted the maximum interest with 45 people applying for the opportunity to bid for it. The base price began at Rs 50,000 and climbed quickly throughout the auction window. By noon, the bid had already reached Rs 88 lakh before eventually touching the record breaking Rs 1.17 crore.

In comparison, last week's highest selling number HR22W2222 closed at Rs 37.91 lakh which makes this week's outcome even more striking.

Why HR88B8888 Became Such a Massive Draw

HR88B8888 is classified as a VIP registration number. Each segment of the plate carries specific meaning related to vehicle registration norms in India.

• B represents the series code issued by the same RTO

Part of the fascination for bidders came from the visual pattern the number creates. With the uppercase B resembling the shape of the number eight, the entire plate appears almost like a continuous sequence of eights. Since 8 is often considered a symbol of prosperity and good fortune in many cultures, the combination drove intense interest and competitive bidding.

Rise of High Value Plates in India

This record setting auction is part of a broader trend where VIP vehicle numbers are becoming status symbols for luxury car owners. Earlier in April, Kerala based tech billionaire Venu Gopalakrishnan made headlines after buying the plate KL 07 DG 0007 for his Lamborghini Urus Performante. The plate cost him Rs 45.99 lakh after starting from an initial bid of Rs 25,000.

The number 0007 is strongly associated with the famous James Bond franchise which added to its exclusivity and boosted its final value. The plate has since become one of the most talked about registrations in Kerala's luxury vehicle circuit.
