How a Mysuru Army Officer's Presence of Mind Foils Terror Plan, Saves 40 Tourists in Pahalgam Terror Attack

In the haunting aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 27 tourists in Baisaran Meadow, remarkable tales of courage and survival are emerging. One of these stories centers around an Indian Army officer from Mysuru, Karnataka, whose swift actions saved nearly 40 lives.

Prasanna Kumar Bhat, the officer's brother, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share how their family escaped the tragedy by mere minutes. He highlighted their survival, attributing it to a combination of luck, divine grace, and his brother's composure under pressure.

On the day of the attack, Prasanna arrived in Pahalgam with his wife, brother, and sister-in-law at about 12:30 PM, embarking on a pony ride to Baisaran Meadow. After enjoying some kawa at a local stall, the group decided to take an impromptu stroll around 2 PM-an innocent choice that ultimately saved their lives.

"Just 25 minutes later, a mere 400 meters from where we were standing, gunfire erupted. Terrorists had begun their vicious assault," Prasanna recounted. His brother, a senior Army officer who has chosen to remain unnamed, immediately recognized the chaos for what it was-a terrorist attack.

"There was pandemonium. The meadow is enclosed on all sides, and people were rushing towards the main entrance-directly into the line of fire," he noted.

As terror surrounded them and a gunman drew closer, the officer sprang into action. He quickly gathered around 35-40 frightened tourists, fashioned a makeshift opening in the fence using a pipe, and guided them through it toward a nearby stream, moving them away from the danger.

Despite struggling with poor mobile service, he managed to notify the local Army unit and the headquarters in Srinagar. Within 40 minutes, helicopters and rescue vehicles arrived to safely extract the group.

Prasanna's heartfelt account of his brother's heroism is resonating widely online, with many praising the officer as a quiet hero who transformed a day destined for tragedy into one of survival.
