BJP Minority Morcha President's House Set on Fire Following Support for Waqf Amendment Act
A mob set fire to the home of Asker Ali, president of the BJP Minority Morcha in Manipur, on Sunday night. This incident occurred in Lilong, Thoubal district, after Ali voiced support for the Waqf Amendment Act on social media. Around 9 pm, the mob vandalised his residence before setting it ablaze, according to officials.

Earlier that day, protests erupted across Imphal Valley against the Act. Over 5,000 people participated in a rally at Lilong, causing traffic disruptions on NH 102. Demonstrators clashed with security forces in some areas. One such confrontation occurred at Irong Chesaba in Thoubal when security personnel halted their progress.
Protests and Public Sentiment
Protesters expressed strong opposition to the BJP-led government and the Waqf Amendment Act. "The Waqf Amendment Act is against the ethos of the Constitution. It is completely unacceptable for the Muslim community," stated protester Sakir Ahmed. Demonstrations also took place in Kshatri Awang Leikai, Kairang Muslim, and Kiyamgei Muslim areas in Imphal East, as well as Sora in Thoubal district.
Security measures have been heightened in Muslim-majority areas of the Valley. Additional forces have been deployed to maintain order amid rising tensions. The Waqf Amendment Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday and by the Rajya Sabha early Friday after extensive debates.
Details of the Waqf Amendment Act
The Act aims to improve management of Waqf properties, which are assets permanently donated by Muslims for religious or charitable purposes. It includes provisions to protect heritage sites and promote social welfare. The legislation seeks to enhance governance by increasing transparency in property management and improving coordination between Waqf boards and local authorities.
Following the incident at his home, Asker Ali posted a video online apologising for his previous statement supporting the Act. He also expressed opposition to it. President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent to the bill on Saturday, finalising its passage into law.
In response to these developments, demonstrators raised slogans against the central government, criticising the Act's implications. The situation remains tense as authorities continue to monitor events closely across affected regions.
