Holi 2025: Mark Your Calendars For Chhoti Holi And Rangwali Holi –Rituals & Tips To Celebrate Fully Inside
Holi, a vibrant festival in India, is celebrated with colours and joy. It brings people together as they smear colours, enjoy sweets like gujiyas, and engage in water play. Families and friends eagerly anticipate this day, often preparing weeks in advance by gathering colours, gulaal, water guns, balloons, and treats. The festival fosters camaraderie and is cherished by many across the country.
Significance Of Holika Dahan

Holika Dahan marks the triumph of good over evil. According to Hindu mythology, Prahlad's devotion to Lord Vishnu angered his father Hiranyakashyap. In a plot to kill Prahlad, Holika attempted to burn him using her magical cloak that protected her from fire. However, divine intervention saved Prahlad while Holika perished in the flames. This event is commemorated annually as a symbol of righteousness prevailing over wickedness.
The celebration of Holi spans two days: Chhoti Holi and Rangwali Holi. Chhoti Holi involves the ritualistic bonfire known as Holika Dahan. This year, it falls on March 13, with Rangwali Holi following on March 14. The Purnima Tithi begins at 10:35 AM on March 13 and ends at 12:23 PM on March 14. These dates are crucial for those observing the festival.
Rituals Of Holika Dahan
The rituals for Holika Dahan begin days before the event. Children collect wood and twigs to prepare for the bonfire. In some communities, effigies of Holika are crafted and burned as a representation of eradicating evil from their lives. As the fire blazes, people offer prayers seeking protection from malevolence and releasing negativity.
The timing for lighting the bonfire is significant due to Bhadra Kaal on March 13. Bhadra Kaal is considered an inauspicious period during which no religious ceremonies should occur. On this day, Bhadra Punchha lasts from 6:57 PM to 8:14 PM, followed by Bhadra Mukha from 8:14 PM to 10:22 PM.
Celebrating Rangwali Holi
The day after Holika Dahan is Rangwali Holi, when people immerse themselves in colours and festivities without any specific timing constraints. The morning starts with breakfast before everyone heads out with gulaal and water guns to drench each other in vibrant hues. Children particularly enjoy this day with their pichkaris filled with coloured water.
During breaks from playing with colours, families gather at home to enjoy traditional sweets like gujiyas along with refreshments before resuming the fun-filled activities throughout the day.
Safety Tips For Enjoying Holi
While celebrating Holi is joyous, safety should not be overlooked. Using organic or herbal gulaal instead of chemical dyes helps prevent skin damage. Applying oil to hair and moisturiser on skin can protect against colour stains. Most importantly, ensure that everyone participates willingly; never force anyone into playing if they decline.
Holi remains one of India's most cherished festivals due to its vibrant celebrations that bring communities together while honouring age-old traditions rooted in mythology.
