Himachal Pradesh Reports 15.70 Percent Increase in Trout Production for 2023-24
Trout production in Himachal Pradesh has seen a notable rise of 15.70% in 2023-24 compared to the previous year, according to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. This increase is attributed to the dedication of local fishermen and supportive government policies. The total trout production reached 1,388 metric tonnes in 2023-24, up from 1,170.50 metric tonnes in 2022-23.

The state government is actively working to enhance the rural economy, benefiting those living in these areas. Thousands of families depend on fisheries for their livelihood, with 742 families currently involved in trout production. The government is formulating policies to boost fish production, thereby strengthening the fishermen's economy.
Trout Hatcheries and Training Initiatives
Himachal Pradesh boasts nine government-run trout hatcheries and six private ones that supply trout seeds to farmers. The fisheries department provides training on modern trout farming techniques to fishermen. This initiative aims to equip them with advanced skills for better productivity and sustainability.
The Chief Minister highlighted the collaborative efforts between fishermen and the government as key to this growth. "The increase in the production is a clear result of the hard work of our fishermen and the government's supportive policies," he stated.
Impact on Tourism and Future Prospects
The rising popularity of trout farming is also boosting tourism in Himachal Pradesh. With advanced farming methods and growing market demand, trout production is set for further expansion, benefiting both farmers and the state economy.
The state's total trout production was 913.50 metric tonnes in 2021-22, showing a consistent upward trend over recent years. This growth reflects the effective strategies implemented by both the government and local communities.
As Himachal Pradesh continues to develop its fisheries sector, it aims to create more opportunities for rural families while contributing positively to the state's economic landscape.
