Himachal Pradesh Heatwave Weather Alert: Yellow Alert Given Out By IMD

This year, Himachal Pradesh is seeing some extreme heat in June, with several districts reaching temperatures above 40°C. These high temperatures have been plaguing the state for a while now. One of the districts, Una, recorded 45°C on 31 May, the second-highest temperature recorded in the district's history.

IMD has given the following forecast for the state for the next couple days.

Himachal Pradesh Heatwave Alert

IMD's Forecast On Himachal Pradesh's Weather And Temperature:

Yellow alerts for heatwaves have been given out by IMD's meteorological centre in Shimla. These yellow alerts were given for the districts Una and Sirmaur and are to last from 12 June till 14 June. Other districts like Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, and Solan have also received yellow alerts for heatwaves on 14 June. The maximum temperatures in these regions for the next couple days may hover around 40°C.

Other parts of Himachal Pradesh are also expected to reach high temperatures in the next couple days. Examples of this are Chamba and Dharamshala with a max temperature forecast of around 38°C, and Solan to also go as high as 37°C.

It's not all heatwave related news, though, as it has been forecast that light rains may come to the different districts of Himachal Pradesh on 14 June as well. There may even be a little snow in the hilly areas in high altitudes.

IMD's Advice To Combat The Current Heat Situation:

IMD has concerns that while the heat may not affect most parts of the population, it may cause problems for vulnerable sections of the population like infants, the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. To combat this, they've given the following advice:

  1. Avoid heat exposure.
  2. Wear lightweight, light colour, loose, cotton clothes.
  3. Cover your head, use a cloth, hat or umbrella

They also advised farmers to "Apply light and frequent irrigation to standing crops to avoid heat stress," and "provide mulching to conserve soil moisture and minimize evaporation."
