CM Sukhu Stands Firm: No Compromises on State's Interest in Hydropower Projects
The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, has declared that his government will not compromise when it comes to protecting the state's interests in its hydropower projects. He accused the previous BJP government of jeopardizing these interests and vowed to restore royalty rights which had been dismissed by them.
On Tuesday, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made a firm declaration that there would be no compromise on the state's interests in hydropower projects. This statement came amidst accusations levelled against the previous BJP government for allegedly selling off the state's interests in these critical ventures.
Accusations Against Previous Government

Sukhu accused the past BJP administration of compromising the state's stake in hydropower initiatives. In response to a question posed by BJP's Sukhram Chowdhary during an assembly meeting, he claimed his government has taken corrective measures to protect these interests. The current regime has amended energy policies and decided to reinstate royalty in hydropower projects; this was previously abolished by the former BJP government. "This government will not allow the interests of the state to be bartered," affirmed Sukhu.
Controversial MOUs and Legal Proceedings
Drawing attention towards some controversial decisions taken during an Investors meet held under BJP governance, Sukhu pointed out that Memorandums Of Understanding (MOUs) were signed with Public Sector Undertakings - Sutlej Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC). These agreements pertained to Dhaula-Sidha, Sainj and Sunni-Luhri hydel projects but were executed without any provision for royalty. Further compounding matters, these companies reportedly began construction work without obtaining necessary permissions from relevant authorities.
In response to this alleged disregard for due process, notices have been served by the present government demanding restoration of royalties and questioning commencement of works without proper authorization. While NTPC has shown willingness to engage in discussions regarding these issues, SJVN chose to challenge this action legally by moving High Court. However, according to Sukhu, the court's decision was in favour of the government.
Future Course of Action
Sukhu remained resolute in his stance, asserting that if these companies do not comply with the government's directives, they would face serious repercussions. The exact nature of these consequences were not elaborated upon during his address. It remains to be seen how this situation will unfold and what impact it may have on Himachal Pradesh's hydropower projects and overall energy landscape.
In conclusion, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s firm stand against perceived irregularities in hydropower project dealings sends a strong message about his administration’s commitment to protecting state interests. While it is important for governments to encourage investment and development activities, it is equally crucial that such initiatives do not compromise on legal protocols or undermine state interests. This episode serves as a significant reminder for public sector undertakings and private entities alike to adhere strictly to due process while embarking on infrastructural projects within the state.
