Himachal Follows UP: Eatery Owners' Names To Be Displayed In Restaurants

Himachal Pradesh will enforce a regulation requiring the public display of restaurant owner and staff names to enhance food safety and hygiene. This initiative, starting in January, mirrors similar actions taken by Uttar Pradesh and aims to address public concerns over food quality.

In an effort to enhance food hygiene and safety, restaurants and food stalls in Himachal Pradesh will soon be required to publicly display the names of their owners and staff members. This new regulation, spearheaded by the state's Congress government, mirrors a similar initiative previously undertaken by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh.

Scheduled to commence in Shimla, the state capital, from January, this initiative aims to promote transparency and ensure the cleanliness of food provided to the public.

Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh emphasized the importance of this measure in a statement to the press. He mentioned, "We have decided to strictly enforce the rules in the state, much like Uttar Pradesh," highlighting the government's commitment to ensuring the provision of hygienic food. This decision came about as a collaborative effort between the Urban Development Ministry and the Municipal Corporation, addressing public concerns over food safety at local eateries.

The inspiration for Himachal Pradesh's new rule can be traced back to Uttar Pradesh's actions earlier in the year. The Uttar Pradesh government had introduced a policy requiring the display of names of the owners, managers, and proprietors of food outlets, particularly along the Kanwar Yatra routes. This move, intended to foster transparency and allow pilgrims to make informed food choices, stirred a significant debate. Despite the controversy, the policy was reaffirmed following incidents that raised alarms about food safety, including a widely shared video of a teenager spitting on rotis at a Saharanpur eatery and reports of food contamination in other parts of the state.

In response to these incidents, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath mandated several measures to ensure food safety. These included not only the display of names and addresses of food centre operators but also the requirement for chefs and waiters to wear masks and gloves. Additionally, the installation of CCTV cameras in hotels and restaurants became obligatory, furthering the government's commitment to maintaining high standards of food hygiene.

The decision to implement similar measures in Himachal Pradesh reflects a growing concern for food hygiene across states. The time leading up to the rule's enforcement in January will be used for necessary preparations, such as the issuance of identity cards to food establishment staff.
