Hijab Row In Tripura: Girls Stopped From Entering School, Boy Thrashed For Protesting

Members of a right-wing group in Tripura allegedly assaulted a Muslim boy who objected to their preventing Muslim girls from entering a school while wearing hijab. The victim, a class 10 student, was reportedly dragged out and beaten in front of the school, with no teachers, including the headmaster, coming to his aid.

The incident caused outrage among locals, leading to road blockades in protest. The attackers were said to be outsiders with no affiliation to the school.

Authorities have stated that the situation is now under control in the Bishalgarh subdivision of Sepahijala district, which was tense following the incident.

According to the school authorities, a week prior to the incident, a group of former students, claiming affiliation with a right-wing organization, visited the school and raised concerns about Muslim girl students wearing hijab on the premises. They requested the headmaster to impose a ban, citing non-compliance with the prescribed government uniform. In the absence of clear instructions from the concerned government department regarding such a rule, the headmaster verbally informed the students not to wear hijab in the school.

The police have denied that the incident is communal, despite some platforms reporting it as such. They have registered a case and are actively investigating the matter.

In the area, known for its diverse population with members of different communities, heavy police deployment has been implemented as a precautionary measure. Classes have been suspended to de-escalate the situation.

State authorities are closely monitoring the developments and working to resolve the issue and restore peace in the region.
