92% Turnout in Udhampur's Home Voting for Elderly, PwD Electors

In a significant move to enhance electoral participation, the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency witnessed the commencement of home voting for elderly citizens and persons with disabilities on Monday, marking a notable turnout of 92 per cent on the first day, as per official reports. This initiative, aimed at facilitating the electoral process for voters aged above 85 years and those with disabilities meeting the 40 per cent criterion, saw postal ballots being cast from the comfort of homes across various districts including Kathua, Udhampur, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar.

High Turnout in Udhampur Voting

Rakesh Minhas, the Returning Officer for the Udhampur parliamentary constituency, highlighted that out of 621 eligible electors under these categories, an impressive 92 per cent exercised their franchise. This pioneering effort by the Election Commission (EC) to introduce home voting for a Lok Sabha election underscores a commitment to ensuring inclusivity and accessibility in the democratic process.

Saloni Rai, District Election Officer (DEO) of Udhampur, provided further insights into the process. According to Rai, the district received 124 postal ballot votes, with 116 successfully polled. Additionally, five votes were cast within the district jail at Udhampur. This detailed attention to facilitating voting for all eligible citizens reflects a broader aim to uphold the EC's motto of ensuring no voter is left behind.

The operational logistics of this initiative involve a dedicated team of polling officials, accompanied by security personnel, visiting voters' residences to collect their votes. To maintain transparency and integrity in the electoral process, these activities are being meticulously recorded on video. This method not only simplifies voting for those facing physical barriers but also reaffirms the democratic principle that every vote counts.

The introduction of home voting for the first time in a Lok Sabha election represents a significant step forward in making the electoral process more accessible and inclusive. By reaching out to elderly citizens and persons with disabilities directly at their doorsteps, the Election Commission is actively working towards ensuring that physical limitations do not impede an individual's right to vote. This initiative is a testament to the ongoing efforts to enhance electoral participation and ensure that every eligible citizen has an equal opportunity to partake in shaping the nation's future.
