Heavy Rains Batter Kerala: 4 Dead, 1 Missing; University Exam Postponed

Four people have died due to rain-related incidents while one person is missing in Kerala.

The casualties have been reported in Palakkad's Wadakkancherry, Arippalam in Thrissur, Adoor in Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha, Manorama reported.

A 19-year-old boy drowned to death in Thrissur after he went fishing in a canal at Arippalam. An autorickshaw driver died after his vehicle fell into a canal in Adoor in Pathanamthitta while a man died after being caught in the strong current in the canal.

A woman was killed after a coconut tree fell on her in Palakkad.

95 houses were partially damaged and another 100 got waterlogged due to sea erosion in Kozhikode, according to a report in The New Indian Express. .

Early on Wednesday, the body a migrant worker, who had been missing since a country boat overturned in severe rains and powerful winds near the Thottappally spillway, was recovered. In a separate incident, one individual went missing in Iruvanjipuzha, Kozhikode, while a woman and her grandchild were swept away at Amarambalam in Malappuram on the same day.

As the heavy rains batter Kerala, educational institutions in six districts have declared a holiday on Wednesday. Kannur University has postponed all the examinations which were scheduled to be held today.

Idukki, Kasaragod, and Kannur have been issued a red alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and an orange alert for the remaining 11 districts.

On Tuesday, Kasaragod, Kannur, and Idukki experienced intense rainfall. According to IMD data from Tuesday morning, Cherthala in Alappuzha received 15 cm of rain, while Kottayam, Kudulu (Kasaragod), and Ranni AWS (Pathanamthitta district) recorded 14 cm each.
