Delhi Grapples with Severe Heat Wave: 50 Bodies Recovered, Heatstroke Cases Surge

In a distressing development from the national capital, Delhi, the bodies of 50 individuals from underprivileged socioeconomic backgrounds have been discovered over the last 48 hours. This alarming number comes as the city grapples with an intense heat wave, causing a significant rise in heatstroke cases and related fatalities. While police and health officials have yet to confirm if all deaths are directly linked to the heat, the correlation is hard to ignore.

Delhi Heat Wave: 50 Dead, Cases Surge

A senior police officer highlighted a particularly poignant case where a 55-year-old man's body was found at a children's park near India Gate on Wednesday. A post-mortem is pending to determine the exact cause of death. The Centre for Holistic Development, an NGO dedicated to aiding the homeless, reported that 192 homeless individuals succumbed to the heat wave from June 11 to June 19 alone.

Hospitals across Delhi have seen a surge in patients suffering from heatstroke and heat exhaustion. The city's maximum temperature soared to 43.6 degrees Celsius, significantly above the normal range. This spike in temperature has been accompanied by an unprecedented night temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius, marking the highest for June since 1969, according to the Met office.

The Centre-run RML Hospital has been at the forefront of this crisis, receiving 22 patients in just two days, with five fatalities reported. A notable aspect of this situation is that most victims did not have any pre-existing health conditions. The hospital has innovatively set up a dedicated heatstroke unit equipped with cooling technology to manage such emergencies effectively.

Similarly, Safdarjung Hospital reported receiving 60 patients with suspected heatstroke symptoms, with six fatalities so far. LNJP Hospital also reported four deaths due to suspected heatstroke within the same timeframe. These incidents underscore the severity of the current heat wave's impact on public health.

Dr Atul Kakar from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital emphasized the surge in heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps and exhaustion. He stressed the importance of public awareness regarding heat safety measures to prevent such adverse outcomes.

Moreover, the prolonged heat wave has led to an increase in cases of lupus, an autoimmune disease that primarily affects women. Dr Lalit Duggal from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital noted a rise in lupus cases due to exacerbated symptoms triggered by the high temperatures.

In response to these incidents, Delhi police have been receiving numerous calls about unnatural deaths among security guards, beggars, and other underprivileged individuals across all districts. Investigations are underway as authorities work to determine the exact causes of these deaths, with autopsy reports still pending.

This series of events highlights the critical need for effective measures and public awareness to combat the health risks posed by extreme temperatures. As healthcare providers remain on high alert, it is imperative for individuals to take necessary precautions during peak heat periods to safeguard against heat-related illnesses.
