Heart breaking: Know why Odisha woman pawns her sons

Bhubaneswar, Feb 18: A heart breaking story has surfaced from Odisha where a woman was forced to pawn her minor sons to get money for funeral of her husband.

This heart breaking story from Keonjhar district surfaced when lock development officer S Nayak and other officials reached Champua on receiving information about the 'mortgaging'.

Poverty ridden woman Sabitri Nayak of Gadhuli village in Keonjhar district was left with no other options but to mortgage her minor sons to pay for her husband's funeral.

"I had to pawn my two sons because I don't even have money to feed my children," said Sabitri, who has three more children, Akash (9), Chilari (8) and Barsha (4)," the Times of India quoted Sabitri as saying.

Sabitri's daily wage worker husband Raiba passed away due to illness on January 26. Family's entire savings was drained in his treatment.

Sabitri took the decision to mortgage her sons when she did not get financial help from anyone.

However, the visiting official denied that the boys were pawned, saying, "They will look after the cattle of the entire village to pay back the money." But, he admitted that the two quit school for employment.
