Health Ministry Calls for Nationwide Implementation of Standard Treatment Workflows

The Union health ministry has urged all states to ensure that physicians implement 157 Standard Treatment Workflows (STWs) across 28 specialties. These workflows, developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), aim to standardise care in hospitals and promote the rational use of essential drugs and diagnostics.

Nationwide Push for Treatment Standards

In a letter addressed to the principal secretaries of health in all states and Union Territories, as well as the National Medical Commission (NMC) for dissemination in medical colleges, Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra highlighted the significance of these STWs. He emphasised that the rapid advancements in medical science necessitate healthcare providers to stay updated with extensive treatment guidelines and reference manuals.

Standardising Healthcare Practices

Chandra pointed out that the growing body of scientific evidence and fast-paced medical advancements require a simplified approach. This approach is provided through a one-page app-based tool designed to guide doctors continuously as they manage patients. The STWs are concise documents intended for use at various healthcare levels, from primary to tertiary care.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), in collaboration with the National Health Authority (NHA) and the World Health Organization's India Country Office, has developed these STWs. They cover common and serious diseases encountered by physicians at all healthcare levels. Chandra stressed that these workflows help establish uniform standards of care within the Indian Public Health Care system.

Encouraging Rational Use of Resources

These STWs are instrumental in effective patient management and encourage the rational use of essential drugs, diagnostics, and other healthcare services. National experts across India, with extensive experience in patient care, have prepared these workflows considering the feasibility within the Indian healthcare system.

The STWs are available on the ICMR website and can be downloaded as a mobile app for both Android and iOS devices. Chandra requested support and cooperation from state health departments to ensure better utilisation and dissemination of these workflows among physicians in the Indian Public Health Care System.

"I seek your support and cooperation for better utilization and spreading of these STWs among physicians in our Indian Public Health Care System through your Departments of Health and Family Welfare," Chandra stated.

By adopting these workflows, healthcare providers can ensure consistent standards of care across hospitals. This initiative aims to improve patient outcomes by providing clear, concise guidelines that are easily accessible through digital platforms.

The implementation of these STWs is expected to streamline healthcare practices, making it easier for doctors to stay updated with current medical guidelines. This will ultimately benefit patients by ensuring they receive standardised and effective treatment across different healthcare settings.
