He should be, and function only as the PM of India: Fali S Nariman
Fali S Nariman, noted jurist and senior advocate has showered praise on the judges of the Punjab and Haryana High Court who pulled up the Centre and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for their failure to curb the violence in the aftermath of the Ram Rahim verdict.
Dera Sauda Sacha chief, Gurmeet Ram Rahim was convicted on rape charges on Friday following which there was widespread violence in which 36 lives were lost.
In a statement, Nariman said, " "Heartiest congratulations to the brave judges of the Full Bench of the High Court, who have expressed (in open Court) their deep sense of anguish at the avoidable carnage that took place last Friday."
"It needed to be said that the Prime Minister is not the head of the Political Party in power at the Centre (God forbid!). He should be, and function only as the Prime Minister of India. Likewise, the Chief Minister is not the head of the political party in power in the State; he should be, and he should always function as the Chief Minister of the State," Nariman also said.
He further said, Persons who hold such High Offices, and yet do not pay heed to the responsibility that attaches to them, fail us - which does not augur well for what we citizens have been pleased (and proud) to call 'Our Democracy.'
