‘He Promised To Retire Soon’: Emotional Farewell To Captain Sumeet Sabharwal

A haunting silence gripped Powai, Mumbai, as the body of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, pilot of the ill-fated Air India flight AI171, was brought home on June 13. The London-bound aircraft had taken off from Ahmedabad the previous day, June 12, 2025, but crashed minutes later, killing 241 of the 242 people on board. Captain Sabharwal, a veteran pilot with over 8,200 hours of flying experience, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic crash that has shaken the nation.

Standing outside his residence, Pushkaraj Sabharwal, Captain Sabharwal's father and a retired senior DGCA official, paid a heart-wrenching tribute. With tears streaming down his face and hands folded in silent grief, he watched his son's mortal remains arrive for the final rites. He could not speak, overwhelmed by the devastating loss of his only child. Just days before the crash, his son had promised to retire soon to care for him full time, a promise that will now forever remain unfulfilled.

The funeral took place at the Chakala electric cremation ground. A large crowd gathered, including residents of Jal Vayu Vihar, a community home to many retired Air Force and aviation personnel. Friends, colleagues, and well-wishers came together to mourn and honor the memory of the dedicated pilot.

Captain Sabharwal's colleagues described him as calm, disciplined, and fiercely committed to safety. A devoted son, he lived with his elderly father and was known for his quiet demeanor and strong sense of responsibility. Aviation ran deep in the Sabharwal family, his father having served with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and his nephews also working as pilots.

Across the country and within the aviation fraternity, grief has poured in over the death of Captain Sabharwal. Tributes to his professionalism and humanity continue to flood social media and private circles alike. The crash itself remains under investigation by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, working alongside the US National Transportation Safety Board, as the nation waits for answers.

For now, all that remains is the image of a grieving father saluting his son one last time. Captain Sumeet Sabharwal's life and legacy have left behind a void that resonates far beyond his family, echoing through every airport corridor and flight deck across the country.
