Hathras Stampede: Evidence Suggests Organisers' Culpability, Says SIT Chief

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Uttar Pradesh government, investigating the Hathras stampede, has recorded statements from 90 individuals so far. Anupam Kulshrestha, the SIT chief and Additional Director General of Police for the Agra Zone, confirmed this on Friday. The team is preparing a comprehensive report on the July 2 stampede at a satsang that resulted in 121 fatalities.

Progress in Investigation

Kulshrestha mentioned that a preliminary report has already been submitted, and work on the detailed report is ongoing. "Ninety statements have been recorded so far," she said. The scope of the investigation has widened as new evidence has come to light, indicating potential culpability by the event organisers. "Definitely, the gathered evidence suggests culpability on the part of the event organisers," she added.

Legal Actions and Arrests

The officer also noted that six volunteers from the satsang organising committee were arrested on Thursday, with more arrests expected soon. "Those culpable will definitely face legal action," Kulshrestha stated. Additionally, searches are being conducted for Devprakash Madhukar, who is considered a main suspect in the case.

Chief Minister Briefed

In Lucknow, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been briefed on the initial SIT report regarding the stampede. The confidential report includes statements from Hathras District Magistrate Ashish Kumar, Superintendent of Police Nipun Aggarwal, and senior health department officials who managed the emergency response.

Judicial Commission Formed

On Wednesday, the state government established a three-member judicial commission led by a retired high court judge to investigate the Hathras tragedy further and explore any conspiracy angles behind the stampede. The FIR filed on July 2 includes charges under sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) such as culpable homicide not amounting to murder and disobedience to public servant orders.

The investigation continues as authorities aim to uncover all aspects of this tragic incident and ensure accountability for those responsible.
