Haryana To Launch Green Coal Plants For Sustainable Waste Management

Haryana is set to introduce waste-to-charcoal plants, also known as green coal plants, under the leadership of Union Power and Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Sh Manoj Lal. An agreement between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (NVVN) and the Haryana government will soon be signed to initiate this project.

During a meeting held at Shram Shakti Bhawan in New Delhi, chaired by Sh Manoj Lal, discussions focused on implementing these plants. Senior officers from the Haryana Government were also present.

Haryana s Leap Towards Green Coal Energy

The meeting highlighted NVVN's initiative to convert solid waste into green coal, a sustainable alternative that can be blended with regular coal for electricity generation in thermal power plants.

NVVN officials are scheduled to visit potential sites for setting up these green coal plants. Initially, the plants will be established in Gurugram-Manesar and Faridabad, with plans to expand to other cities in Haryana. The Municipal Commissioner, Dr Narhari Singh Bangar, mentioned that the Municipal Corporation has already begun the process and shown some sites to NVVN officials in Gurugram.

Union Minister Sh Manoj Lal has directed that green coal projects should be established in various districts of Haryana. He emphasized that the Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with NVVN, should set up a plant at an alternative site in Bandhwari or Gurugram-Manesar capable of processing about 1200 tonnes of solid waste daily.

In Faridabad, the Municipal Corporation is expected to start setting up a plant with a capacity of 1000 tonnes per day on available land in village Mothu ka, in partnership with NVVN. Establishing these waste-to-green coal plants will not only address the waste problem but also boost energy production.

NVVN has already set up a green coal plant in Varanasi that processes 600 tonnes of waste daily to produce 200 tonnes of green coal with minimal residue. Additionally, NVVN is working on similar projects in Haldwani, Vadodara, Noida, Gorakhpur, and Bhopal.

The detailed action plans for solid waste management are being prepared for municipal corporations to tackle the growing solid waste issue in cities. This initiative aims to provide a sustainable solution by converting waste into bio-coal.

Sh Manoj Lal stated that setting up these plants would offer a permanent solution to the waste problem while increasing energy production. He urged that the process should be expedited to ensure timely implementation of these projects.

The introduction of green coal plants marks a significant step towards sustainable waste management and energy production in Haryana. This initiative reflects a commitment to addressing environmental challenges through innovative solutions.
