Haryana Govt Suspends Kaithal SDM Following AAP's Abuse Allegation

In a significant development from Haryana, the state government took decisive action against a sub-divisional magistrate-cum-assistant returning officer following allegations of misconduct. The official, identified as Haryana Civil Services (HCS) officer Brahm Parkash, faced suspension with immediate effect on Saturday. This move came in the wake of accusations by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regarding the denial of permission for two poll-related events, allegedly accompanied by abusive language in the response.

Kaithal SDM Suspended Over Abuse Claim

The controversy surfaced when the AAP sought approval for two electoral programs slated for April 7, within the Kurukshetra parliamentary constituency. Sushil Gupta, the AAP's Haryana unit chief and Lok Sabha candidate from Kurukshetra, highlighted the issue on Friday. According to Gupta, one application was outright rejected, while the other received a response filled with objectionable language. This incident prompted a call for stringent action from the Election Commission.

In response to these allegations, Parkash had initially ordered the suspension of five computer operators and directed a comprehensive police investigation into the matter. The official order detailing Parkash's suspension stipulates that he is to remain at the chief secretary to the Haryana government's office in Chandigarh during his suspension period. Furthermore, he is not permitted to leave without prior approval from the chief secretary.

This episode unfolds against the backdrop of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, scheduled to commence on April 19 in seven phases. The counting of votes is set for June 4, with Haryana casting its ballots on May 25. The incident has sparked considerable attention, underscoring the importance of maintaining decorum and professionalism in electoral processes.

The AAP's allegations and subsequent governmental action underscore a critical moment in the lead-up to one of India's most closely watched electoral contests. As preparations for the Lok Sabha polls continue, this incident serves as a reminder of the scrutiny and challenges facing those involved in facilitating a fair and respectful election environment.
