Proposal to Create New Districts in Haryana Ahead of Assembly Elections

In anticipation of the Haryana assembly elections, a proposal for creating new districts is under consideration, aiming to restructure administrative divisions.

New districts may be created before the assembly elections in Haryana. Currently, there are 22 districts in the state. There has been a long-standing demand to make Gohana, Hansi, Asandh, Dabwali, and Manesar into districts. During the first term of the Manohar Lal government, Charkhi Dadri became the 22nd district.

Haryana s Potential New Districts Plan

This was based on a recommendation by a cabinet sub-committee led by then Agriculture Minister Om Prakash Dhankhar. The Dhankar Committee also suggested making Hansi and Gohana districts, but this was not accepted. In the second term of the Manohar government, a new sub-committee was formed under Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala.

This committee recommended creating new sub-divisions, tehsils, and sub-tehsils but did not propose any new districts. Now, a new cabinet sub-committee has been formed under Agriculture Minister Kanwarpal Gujjar in the government of Nayab Singh Saini. Other members include Finance Minister Jai Prakash Dalal and Development Minister Mahipal Singh Dhanda.

Chief Secretary TVS Prasad has issued a notification for forming this committee. The committee will be assisted by various officials from different departments. They must submit their report to the government within three months. The first meeting is expected to be called next week.

In this meeting, reports will be sought from all district collectors based on the committee's instructions. The committee will consider forming new districts, sub-divisions, tehsils, sub-tehsils, panchayat samitis, and gram panchayats based on these reports. The final report will be submitted to CM Nayab Singh Saini and then discussed in the cabinet.

MLAs from various regions have been demanding district status for their areas. These include MLA Shamasher Gogi from Asandh, MLA Amit Sihag from Dabwali, MLA Vinod Bhyan from Hansi, and MLA Jagbir Malik from Gohana. MLAs from Gurugram district have also been pushing for Manesar to become a district.

The government has given the cabinet sub-committee significant power. If needed, they can include any MLA or officer as a member. Hansi, Dabwali, and Manesar have already been made police districts but are not yet revenue districts.

Last December, on the recommendation of former Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala's sub-committee, six new sub-divisions were created: Manesar, Nilokheri, Israna, Chhachhrauli, Nangal Chaudhary and Julana. Bawanikheda of Bhiwani and Kalanaur of Rohtak were also supposed to become sub-divisions but this was not completed.

It is believed that these towns may get this status before the assembly elections. Currently, Haryana has 22 districts with six divisions, 80 sub-divisions, 94 tehsils, 49 sub-tehsils, 140 blocks, 154 cities and 6,841 villages.

The BJP government has made Charkhi Dadri a new district. Ambala Cantt., Badhra, Barakhla, Narnaund, Badli, Uchana, Gharaunda, Punahana and Radaur have been made sub-divisions. Ten new tehsils and three new sub-tehsils have also been created. Taoru and Ladwa were made sub-divisions as well.
