Haryana to Complete Flood Prevention Work Before Monsoon Season

Haryana's Minister of State for Irrigation and Water Resources, Abhe Singh Yadav, recently undertook a critical visit to several villages in the Ambala and Kurukshetra districts, which were severely impacted by the floods of 2023. During his visit, Yadav emphasized the importance of implementing protective measures in areas vulnerable to flooding. He inspected various sites along the border dam of the Tangri River and issued directives for the cleaning and widening of drains to facilitate better management of floodwaters during the monsoon season.

Flood Prevention Efforts in Haryana

Yadav's instructions were clear: flood prevention works must be completed by June 30. He highlighted the necessity of strengthening embankments at key points on the Markanda River with sandbags or cement concrete bags to ensure their durability against future floods. Additionally, Yadav called on residents to stay alert and report any flood-related issues to the Irrigation Department's officials promptly.

The minister provided a sobering overview of the monsoon season's impact in 2023, noting that all rivers in Haryana, including the Yamuna, Ghaggar, Markanda, and Tangri, had exceeded their danger levels. The maximum discharge observed during this period was notably higher than that recorded in the previous year. The consequences of these floods were significant, with 680 villages affected and 1,95,956 acres of land submerged due to excessive rainfall in Kurukshetra and Yamunanagar districts.

This visit underscores the government's commitment to addressing flood-related challenges and ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens. By taking proactive measures and enhancing infrastructure resilience, Haryana aims to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters in the future.
