Haryana Day 2024: Interesting Facts About This State Carved Out Of Erstwhile Punjab
Today is Haryana Day. Every year, November 1 is observed by the people of Haryana as a regional holiday. This annual celebration commemorates the formation of the state in 1966.
In April 1966, the Indian government appointed a commission to examine East Punjab's territory and provide recommendations regarding Haryana's formation.

By May, the commission had submitted its report, and most suggestions were adopted. However, the city of Chandigarh was designated a joint capital for both Haryana and Punjab, a decision based on linguistic groups that diverged from the commission's recommendation.
With a population of 25 million, Haryana celebrates this day with spirited festivities. Streets are filled with events like bicycle races and foot races. A food festival is organised at tourist spots on the same day, alongside blood donation drives, live musical performances, and brightly decorated public buildings. These activities come together to make the day memorable.
History of Haryana Day
Haryana Day, celebrated annually on 1st November, is a prominent cultural event in Haryana's calendar. It marks the historic day in 1966 when Haryana became an independent state, officially separated from Punjab. The festivities bring communities across the state together through a variety of vibrant events and activities.
The celebration includes lively events such as cycle rallies and a rally-cum-race from Chandigarh to Panchkula, where cyclists and enthusiasts participate with immense enthusiasm, filling the streets with cheers and joy.
The day also features the Pakwan Pratiyogita, a culinary festival held at tourist centres across the state. Blood donation camps and "Run for Fun" events are also organised, adding further significance to Haryana Day. In the evenings, musical performances are held in various cities across Haryana, enhancing the day's vibrancy.
Public buildings and state complexes are illuminated with bright lights and decorations, creating a captivating visual experience. A range of contests, races, and other engaging activities are organised, fostering a spirit of joy and active participation from the public.
In April 1966, the Indian government established the Shah Commission to assess Punjab's status and recommend the boundaries for the new state of Haryana, based on the linguistic preferences of the local population. The commission presented its recommendations by late May, leading to the establishment of Haryana as a state on November 1, 1966.
Notably, a significant deviation from the commission's recommendations was the decision to designate Chandigarh as a union territory, serving as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, rather than dividing it. The name 'Haryana' means 'the land of God'.
