Chief Minister of Haryana Announces State-Wide Ban on Serving Hookah in Commercial Venues

In an effort to curb drug addiction, Haryana's Chief Minister has announced a ban on serving hookah in hotels, restaurants, bars and other commercial venues. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of a state-level Cyclothon.

On Monday, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced a ban on serving hookah in hotels, restaurants, bars and commercial establishments throughout the state. This prohibition does not extend to traditional hookahs used in rural areas. The announcement was made during the closing ceremony of a state-level Cyclothon, an event organized as part of a drug de-addiction campaign in Karnal.

Haryana Assembly Speaker's Push for Hookah Ban

Haryana Hookah Ban

The move follows months after Gian Chand Gupta, Haryana Assembly Speaker, called for a ban on serving hookah in hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars and nightclubs across the state. In May this year, Gupta had written to Khattar concerning this issue. He described smoking of hookah in bars and clubs as a burning problem and expressed deep concern about it.

Khattar Advocates for Eco-Friendly Transportation

In addition to the hookah ban announcement, Chief Minister Khattar also championed eco-friendly transportation by unveiling the Haryana Shahri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) programme during his address at the Cyclothon closing ceremony. As per this initiative licensed builders providing housing facilities will gift bicycles along with property registry papers to new homeowners.

This innovative measure is aimed at promoting cycling as an environmentally friendly mode of transport amongst residents while simultaneously encouraging physical fitness. If beneficiaries already own bicycles they will be given Rs 3,000 instead by HSVP or their respective builder.

Cyclothon Flagged Off By Khattar

Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar flagged off the Cyclothon marking its commencement earlier this month. The event served as both a sporting competition and platform for raising awareness against drug addiction - an issue that has been identified as increasingly prevalent within the state.

In conclusion, the recent announcement by Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar signifies a dual commitment to improving public health in the region. The ban on hookahs in urban establishments seeks to tackle issues of passive smoking and drug use, while the introduction of bicycles for new homeowners underlines an effort to promote eco-friendly transportation and fitness among citizens. These initiatives reflect a broader trend towards prioritizing environmental sustainability and public health in policy-making across India.
