For the ruling BJP, this election is nothing short of a litmus test. The saffron party has been in power in Haryana since 2014, when it won 40 seats and formed a coalition government with the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP).
After BJP's Manohar Lal Khattar served as the state's Chief Minister for two consecutive terms, he was replaced as the CM by Nayab Singh Saini. It also ended the BJP-JJP alliance.
The BJP now faces the challenge of retaining power without its former coalition partner, as the dynamics of the election have shifted dramatically.
The opposition Congress, led by Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who ruled Haryana from 2004 to 2014, is leaving no stone unturned to come back to power.
In the 2019 polls, the Congress could not form the government despite winning 31 seats as the JJP joined hands with the BJP.
