Police Encounter Following Haridwar Jewellery Heist Leaves One Dead, Two Arrested

A man accused of robbing a jewellery store in Haridwar was killed in an encounter with the police, and two others were arrested, officials said on Monday. The deceased was identified as Satendra Pal alias Lucky, a resident of Muktsar in Punjab, with a reward of Rs 1 lakh announced on him.

Inspector General of Police for Garhwal region, Karan Singh Nagnyal, stated that around 10:30 pm on Sunday, near Dhanouri in Bahadarabad, the police stopped two people riding a bike without a number plate. Their faces were covered with cloth. In an attempt to escape, they began firing at the police. The police returned fire, and one of the accused was shot.

The injured suspect was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. Meanwhile, another accused managed to flee on the motorcycle. Efforts are ongoing to arrest him, Nagnyal added. Police have recovered some of the stolen items from the accused.

Details of the Robbery

The robbery occurred on September 1 when five individuals robbed a jewellery store at gunpoint in Haridwar. The robbers arrived on scooters and motorcycles and allegedly stole items worth Rs 5 crore. A case has been registered at the Bahadarabad police station under sections 109 (attempt to murder) and 25 (causing hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act.

Haridwar's Senior Superintendent of Police Pramod Doval assessed the situation after the encounter. He called the jewellery shop owner Atul Garg to identify the deceased and the recovered goods.

Further Arrests and Recoveries

In Dehradun, Director General of Police Abhinav Kumar announced that two other robbers involved in the robbery were arrested from near Khyaati Dhaba in Haridwar in the afternoon. The arrested individuals were identified as Gurdeep Singh alias Moni and Jaideep Singh alias Mana.

Jewellery worth Rs 50 lakh was also recovered from their possession. Additionally, a point 32 bore pistol, four cartridges, and a numberless motorcycle used in the incident were seized. Kumar mentioned that police teams are conducting raids to apprehend other absconding suspects named Subhash from Delhi and Aman from Pindi in Punjab.

The incident highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to tackle crime and ensure public safety. The police remain vigilant in their pursuit of justice for those affected by such criminal activities.
