Harbhajan Singh Pens Letter To Bengal Gov, CM Mamata Banerjee Over Delay In Justice To Kolkata Rape Victim
Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder Case: Former Indian cricketer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Harbhajan Singh on Sunday penned an open letter to West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to express his "deep anguish" over the delay in justice for the Kolkata rape and murder victim.
The letter was penned a week after a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered at the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The incident on August 9 has led to widespread outrage and protests across India.

Call for Justice
In his heartfelt plea, Harbhajan Singh addressed the citizens of India, calling for "justice and introspection." He stated, "This unspeakable act of violence, which shook the conscience of all of us, is not just a heinous crime against one individual but a grave assault on the dignity and safety of every woman in our society."
He highlighted that such an atrocity occurring within a medical institution is both shocking and unacceptable. "The fact that such an atrocity could occur within the premises of a medical institution, a place dedicated to healing and saving lives, is both shocking and unacceptable," Habhajan Singh said.
Support for Protesting Doctors
Harbhajan Singh noted that more than a week has passed without any "concrete action," leading doctors to protest on roads. He expressed his support for their cause: "Their (doctors) protests are understood and I wholeheartedly support the medical community in their fight for their cause of justice."
He questioned how doctors can perform their duties with dedication when their own safety is compromised. "The medical community is already working in challenging conditions. With such incidents, how can we expect them to perform their duties with dedication when their own safety is so gravely compromised?" he asked.
Urgent Need for Action
The Rajya Sabha MP urged the West Bengal government and the CBI to take immediate action to ensure justice. He wrote, "The governments must implement comprehensive measures to prevent such occurrences in the future."
Harbhajan Singh also pointed out that such incidents are reported from various parts of India regularly. He stressed the need for systemic change: "It is a reflection of the deeply rooted issues within our society and a blatant reminder of the urgent need for systemic change and action by the authorities."
The open letter was shared on Harbhajan Singh's official X (formerly Twitter) account. It serves as a call to action for authorities to address this grave issue promptly.
This tragic event has not only shaken Kolkata but also highlighted the urgent need for better protection measures for women across India.
