Final rites of Armyman Mitul Kalita from Assam, who was killed in the Sikkim flash flood, was performed with full military honours at native place in Baksa district on Sunday evening. A tragic loss for Assam as it loses a braveheart in Mitul Kalita of Indian Army.

The northeastern Indian state of Assam is mourning the loss of one of its brave sons, Armyman Mitul Kalita, who tragically lost his life in a flash flood in Sikkim. Final rites for the fallen soldier were carried out with full military honours at his native place in Baksa district on Sunday evening, according to official sources.

Tragic Loss for Assam

Expressing grief over the untimely demise of Kalita, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to social media platform ‘X’ earlier that day. "A tragic loss for Assam as it loses a braveheart in Mitul Kalita of Indian Army from Baksa District, in the unfortunate flash flood in Sikkim," he wrote.

The Chief Minister also extended his prayers for the departed soul and offered condolences to the bereaved family during this difficult time. "My prayers for the departed soul & condolences to the bereaved family in this hour of grief", said CM Sarma.

Kalita's Service and Sacrifice

Kalita was serving as a craftsman in the technical department of the Indian Army at Alipurduar when he was sent on departmental orders to Sikkim. The 31-year-old was among 23 soldiers initially reported missing following a sudden flash flood last Wednesday.

While rescue operations managed to save one missing personnel, bodies of nine soldiers including that of Kalita have been recovered so far. The news plunged Anandabazar area of Baksa district into deep sorrow as locals mourned their local hero's untimely demise.

Tributes Pour In

In addition to CM Sarma's tribute, several other dignitaries paid their respects to Kalita. State Cabinet Minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass and the superintendent of police were among those who paid their last respects to the soldier. As news of his death spread, tributes began pouring in from various quarters, reflecting Kalita's service and sacrifice for his country.
