Guru Nanak Jayanti 2024: What’s Closed, What’s Open?

This Friday, November 15, banks, schools, and both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will be closed to mark Guru Nanak Jayanti and Karthika Purnima. The holiday, celebrating Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, is widely observed across India, with additional regional celebrations in states such as Odisha and Telangana.

As per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar, several states will see bank closures on November 15. Key states observing the holiday include Maharashtra, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, and Mizoram. Additional closures will follow in Karnataka on November 18 for Kanakadasa Jayanti and in Meghalaya on November 23 for Seng Kutsnem.

Despite branch closures, online and mobile banking services will be available.

Stock Market Holiday

The NSE and BSE will also observe Guru Nanak Jayanti, providing investors and traders with a long weekend. Trading in stocks, derivatives, and the SLB (Securities Lending and Borrowing) segment will pause on November 15, with markets resuming on Monday, November 18. The next scheduled closure will be on December 25, for Christmas.

School holiday on November 15

Schools across the nation will observe Guru Nanak Jayanti on November 15. In addition, some states have regional holidays, including Punjab, where schools will close on November 16 in honor of Kartar Singh Sarabha's martyrdom. Odisha will observe Rahas Purnima, a significant cultural event, with schools also closed on November 15.
