Gujarat's Smritivan Museum Shortlisted for Prestigious UNESCO Prix Versailles Award
The UNESCO Prix Versailles Award has recognized the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum in Bhuj, Gujarat, as one of the seven most beautiful museums globally. This announcement was shared by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, marking a significant achievement for India. The museum's inclusion in this prestigious list highlights its exceptional design and dedication to expressing local culture and nature conservation.

Chief Minister Patel expressed his pride in this recognition, emphasizing that it is the first time an Indian museum has been acknowledged in such a manner. The Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum stands as a tribute to the victims of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and symbolizes the resilience of the Kutch region. It was an initiative envisioned by Gujarat's then Chief Minister, now Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
Constructed amidst thousands of trees on Bhujia Hill, the museum's design is noted for its remarkable integration with nature and its role in commemorating courage and renewal. According to Patel, the museum offers a transcendental experience that deeply connects visitors with the supreme element of nature.
In its 10th anniversary year, the Prix Versailles continues to celebrate architectural innovation by unveiling the World’s Most Beautiful Museums List for 2024. This initiative aims to recognize museums that blend creativity with ecological efficiency and local heritage reflection, leaving a lasting impact on their environments. The winners of the 2024 World Titles – Prix Versailles, Interior, and Exterior – will be announced at UNESCO Headquarters by late November.
Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, highlighted the evolving role of museums in fostering intercultural dialogue and immersive experiences through technology. He emphasized the creation of the World’s Most Beautiful Museums List as a means to underline the importance of wonder in elevating human perception and encouraging surprise.
The Prix Versailles architectural competitions have been shining a light on outstanding contemporary projects since 2015. By acknowledging museums' contributions to intelligent sustainable development goals, this year's focus on museum buildings seeks to further recognize their significance in global culture and development.
The inclusion of the Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Museum on this distinguished list not only honors its architectural beauty but also its profound message of resilience and remembrance. This global recognition underscores India's growing influence in the fields of architecture, culture, and environmental conservation.
