Gujarat High Court Declares Yusuf Pathan Encroacher on Government Land

The Gujarat High Court has ruled against former cricketer and Trinamool Congress MP Yusuf Pathan, declaring him an encroacher on government land in Vadodara. The court directed Pathan to vacate the plot adjoining his bungalow in Tandalja, stressing that public figures cannot be given preferential treatment under the law.

Justice Mona Bhatt's single-judge bench dismissed Pathan's plea, in which he sought to retain the land citing security concerns and his status as an international sports personality.

How the Dispute Began

The matter dates back to 2012, when the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) issued a notice asking Pathan to vacate the government land he had been occupying. Pathan challenged the notice in the High Court, requesting permission to purchase the plot jointly with his brother, Irfan Pathan.

While municipal authorities forwarded his request to the state government, it was formally rejected in 2014. Despite this, Pathan continued to occupy the land, triggering further legal proceedings that culminated in the latest verdict.

Court's Observations

The High Court underlined that celebrity status cannot be a shield against legal accountability, echoing Supreme Court principles on equality before the law. The bench noted:

"As a national representative and public figure, Pathan's responsibility to abide by the law is even greater."

The judgment emphasized that granting special concessions to celebrities could erode public trust and undermine judicial integrity.
