Guj govt won't have to rebuild religious structures damaged in 2002 riots: SC

The Gujarat High Court had directed the government to pay compensation to more than 500 religious structures that were damaged in the riots.

The religious structures damaged during the 2002 post Godhra riots will not have to be rebuilt by the Gujarat government. The order was passed while setting aside a Gujarat High Court order which asked the state government to pay for the reconstruction and repair work of religious structures damaged in the riots.

The Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justice P C Pant said that the government's scheme of paying ex-gratia of Rs 50,000 for damaged residential and commercial properties would apply to religious properties as well.

The Gujarat High Court had directed the government to pay compensation to more than 500 religious structures that were damaged in the riots. The Gujarat government had said that it was willing to pay the ex-gratia amount for repair and reconstruction of various shops, structures and houses that were damanged.
