New Delhi, Oct 9: The rumour mill is in overdrive with the news indicating that soon Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi will take over the charge of the party president from his mother and current president, Sonia Gandhi.
However, till Rahul's elevation happens to the highest post in the Congress party, everyone is keeping their fingers crossed.
In spite of Rahul's recent admission that he was ready to officially take charge of the party as its chief, the Congress had to first conduct an internal election for party president which is long overdue.
While many of Rahul's vocal supporters within the party like Digvijaya Singh and AK Anthony have been publicly asking him to formally take over the party charge, it won't be a cake walk for the Gandhi scion as 'critics' within the party suggest that organisational election might throw up surprises.
The Congress internal elections for various party posts are likely to take place this month.
However, there are many loyalists within the party like Mani Shankar Aiyar, who can't imagine anyone but a Gandhi to lead the Congress. Aiyar stressed that only two persons can be Congress president.
"I think only 2 people can be Congress President - mother or son. Rahul already said he is ready to contest election," Aiyar was quoted as saying by ANI.

In spite of Rahul's latest avatar which saw him touring the country and hitting the Narendra Modi government hard by attacking the Centre over demonetisation, job loss and polarisation, many within the Congress feel that Rahul should make way for someone more stable and rooted to politics as the Congress president.
