GST Council Meet: Sanitary napkins exempted from tax

New Delhi, July 21: The 28th GST Council meet has decided to fully exempt sanitary napkins from GST, from the existing 12 percent.

A high GST rate on sanitary napkins imposed last year had triggered howls of protest from consumer activist groups.

In January this year, a group of students from Gwalior had launched a campaign by writing messages on sanitary napkins to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to exempt the taxes levied on the product and make it free of cost.

The GST Council was chaired by Piyush Goyal, the minister of railways, who is also handling the charge of finance ministry at the present due to the absence of finance minister Arun Jaitley, who recently went through a kidney transplant surgery.
