X Deletes 3,500 Posts, 600 Accounts After Grok AI Obscenity Row in India
Indian authorities have confirmed that social media platform X has removed around 3,500 posts and over 600 accounts following concerns about explicit content linked to Grok AI. The company has assured the government that it will strengthen its monitoring systems to prevent similar material from appearing in the future.
The action comes after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology raised concerns over obscene and sexually explicit content allegedly generated using Grok AI and circulated on X. Officials highlighted that misuse of AI to create harmful content poses significant risks to users.

On January 2, the ministry instructed X to urgently remove all vulgar and illegal content, with a particular focus on posts generated through Grok. The platform was also required to submit an Action Taken Report within 72 hours detailing the steps taken to block posts, delete accounts, and supervise content moderation under Indian law.
Government sources noted that Grok AI had been used to create fake profiles and target women by manipulating images and videos, raising serious concerns over privacy and online safety.
Following the ministry's directions, X submitted a written response on January 8, which officials described as detailed but not fully adequate. The platform has now committed to upgrading its content moderation systems and adhering more closely to Indian regulations.
Authorities emphasized that the strengthened systems should ensure quicker removal of harmful content, proper documentation of actions, and ongoing monitoring of AI-generated material on the platform.
