Congress Urges Government to Clearly Articulate Stance on Trudeau's Allegations Against India
The Congress party has urged the Indian government to clarify its position on allegations made by Canada and the US, which are affecting India's global reputation. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasised that the opposition should be informed, as maintaining India's international standing is a collective duty. He highlighted the importance of working together to protect India's image as a nation committed to the rule of law.

Ramesh stated that the Congress has already requested the Prime Minister to brief Leaders of Opposition in both Houses of Parliament and other political figures about the serious accusations from the US and Canada. This request comes amid deteriorating India-Canada relations and rising concerns about India-US ties. The situation requires transparency and collaboration among political leaders.
Allegations and Diplomatic Tensions
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused India of involvement in the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, implicating the Indian High Commissioner in the investigation. India has firmly denied these claims, rejecting any links between Indian agents and criminal gangs in Canada. Official sources have also dismissed Ottawa's claim of sharing evidence with New Delhi regarding Nijjar's case.
Ramesh pointed out that Canada's allegations, now supported by several other countries, threaten to escalate further, damaging India's global reputation and "Brand India." He stressed the need for the Indian government to promptly and clearly communicate its stance on this matter. The Congress leader underlined that national security and foreign policy issues require unity across the nation.
India's Response to Canadian Allegations
In response to Canada's accusations, India expelled six Canadian diplomats and recalled its High Commissioner in Canada, Sanjay Kumar Verma. The Indian government described Canada's claims as "preposterous" and part of a political agenda focused on vote-bank politics. This diplomatic move signifies India's strong rejection of the allegations.
The Congress party continues to advocate for a unified approach in addressing these international challenges. By involving opposition leaders in discussions, they believe it will strengthen India's position on the global stage. The situation calls for careful handling to prevent further damage to India's international relations.
As tensions persist, it remains crucial for India to maintain open communication channels with both Canada and the US. Ensuring transparency and cooperation can help mitigate potential diplomatic fallout while safeguarding India's interests abroad.
