Indian Government Launches R&D Centre to Boost Domestic Manufacturing of Renewable Energy Components

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), alongside the Ministry of Power, plans to establish a centre of excellence (CoE) focused on research and development. This initiative aims to boost local production of components essential for generating green energy. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi announced this after a strategic meeting aimed at achieving India's goal of 500 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

New R&D Centre for Renewable Energy Components

Focus on Indigenous Manufacturing

Currently, over 50% of the parts needed for electrolysers are imported. Electrolysers play a crucial role in producing low-emission hydrogen by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. The CoE will focus on developing these components locally. It will also support youth-driven startups through hackathons, contributing to India's self-reliance in the renewable energy sector.

A dedicated task force will be formed, involving the power ministry, MNRE, industry leaders, and key stakeholders. This group will work towards meeting India's ambitious renewable energy target. "We have to add 288 GW in renewable energy generation in the next six years to meet the huge target," Joshi stated. He highlighted that Rs 22 lakh crore has been invested in the sector over the past decade, with an additional Rs 42 lakh crore needed by 2030.

Challenges and Opportunities

Some states are hesitant to sign power purchase agreements despite completed transmission lines and willing clients. This issue was discussed extensively during the two-day conference. Joshi also mentioned Odisha's potential for floating solar plants and green hydrogen hubs. Plans are underway to establish two green hydrogen hubs in Gopalpur and Paradip.

The CoE aims to foster innovation and collaboration in the renewable energy sector. By supporting indigenous manufacturing, India can reduce its reliance on imports and strengthen its position in green technology development. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to achieve significant growth in renewable energy capacity within the next six years.

The establishment of the CoE marks a significant step towards self-reliance in renewable energy technology. By focusing on local manufacturing and innovation, India aims to meet its ambitious energy goals while supporting economic growth and sustainability.
