Govindachamy Nabbed After Kannur Jailbreak: How a Private Sector Employee's Alert Helped Police Track Convict
Govindachamy, convicted in the brutal Soumya rape and murder case, escaped from the high-security Kannur Central Jail in Kerala in the early hours of Friday. His escape sparked a massive manhunt, but it was Vinoj, a private sector employee, who first spotted the fugitive and immediately alerted the authorities.
"I was on my way to office when I noticed a man walking suspiciously. I had seen his photo on the news that morning, so I took a closer look. I called out to him. When he turned, I clearly saw he had no left arm - just like the reports said. The moment we called again, he jumped a wall and fled," Vinoj said. "We wasted no time and informed the Town police right away."

Govindachamy's Daring Escape: What Happened Inside the Jail?
According to jail officials, Govindachamy escaped around 1:15 AM after planning the jailbreak for nearly 20 days. Reports suggest he used a saw-like tool to cut through cast iron bars of his cell in Block 10. He then climbed a high wall, escaping undetected until the morning headcount.
The incident has triggered a full-scale probe. The Kerala government has suspended four jail staff and launched an investigation into CCTV surveillance failures and overall security lapses at the prison.
Who Is Govindachamy?
Govindachamy was serving a life sentence for the rape and murder of 23-year-old Soumya, who was assaulted while travelling on a train from Ernakulam to Shoranur in 2011. The case had shocked the nation and led to widespread outrage.
Govindachamy, who has only one arm, was considered a high-risk inmate. His physical disability was noted as a key identification marker in the police alerts after his escape.
