Google pays tribute to Verghese Kurien, 'The Milk Man of India' with Doodle

Bengaluru, Nov 26: Search engine giant Google on Thursday, Nov 26, paid a tribute to Verghese Kurien, "The Milk man of India" by celebrating his 94th birth anniversary, who earned a global recognition by transforming the milk production fruitfully.

Google created a doodle for the "Father of the White Revolution" by displaying Verghese sitting with a milk can in his hand, along-with a buffalo and a with rope creatively depicting the word 'Google'.

His work in framing the milk cooperative helped to empower milkmen not only in India but all over the world.

This not only helped to yield more milk but also provided better infrastructure for better storage and reduced the wastage of milk.

Kurien was born into a Christian family on Nov 26, 1921 in Kozhikode, Kerala. Kurien, the founder of AMUL (Anand Milk Federation Union Limited) was destined to be the top Milk entrepreneur in India.

He graduated in Physics from Loyola College in Madras in 1940 and later completed his Mechanical Engineering from Guindy College of Engineering, Chennai and he did M.Sc in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan State University in 1948.

Later, he established 30 successful institutions and industries (like AMUL, GCMMF, IRMA, NDDB) which are managed and owned by farmers as well as professionals.

He researched and experimented on ways to produce milk powder from buffalo milk. His dedicated efforts helped in establishing the first milk powder plant in India which was inaugurated by the then prime minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru.

The Government of India honoured him with the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1963, Padma Shri in 1965, Padma Bhushan in 1966 and Padma Vibhushan in 1999. Kurien was honoured for his excellent work and he received World Food Prize in 1989.

After enriching India, Kurien passed away on Sept 9, 2012 in Nadiad, Gujarat at the age of 90.
