Rape: Godman Asaram Bapu's bail plea rejected, undergoes treatment in jail

plea filed by the self-styled godman in connection with a rape case filed by a 16-year-old girl.

The apex court, while overruling the bail plea, asked jail authorities to form a special media team which would take care of Asaram Bapu. The self-styled godman earlier had complained that he has been suffering from trigeminal neuralgia which causes severe headaches to those afflicted with the condition.

72-year-old Asaram Bapu was arrested and was lodged in Jodhpur jail after a 16-year-old girl lodged a police complaint on Aug 20, 2013 accusing him of sexually assaulting her at his ashram in Jodhpur. Asaram Bapu was accused of raping the girl inside his ashram near Jodhpur.

Asaram Bapu was reported to have been suffering from trigeminal neuralgia

An apex court bench headed by Justice TS Thakur directed the principal of Jodhpur-based SN Medical College to constitute a team of doctors that will examine Asaram for his ailment and the course of treatment required.

The court said the report of the medical board will be submitted to it by Sep 23, when the matter will be further heard.

Meanwhile, Asaram Bapu will continue to remain in jail as the court said that his bail will only be considered after all the witnesses in the case have deposed before the trial court.
