Shacks In Goa Now Mandated To Serve Fish Curry-Rice Along With Other Cuisines

Goa's sun-kissed beaches, famous for their lively shacks offering a variety of Indian and international cuisines, are set to add another feather in their cap. In an attempt to promote the local cuisine, the state's tourism minister Rohan Khaunte announced on Sunday that all beach shacks will now be required to serve "fish curry-rice", a staple dish of the coastal state. This move is part of Goa's new Shack Policy aimed at showcasing Goan culinary delights to visitors.

The decision was made in response to observations that while these popular beachfront joints offered North Indian food among other dishes, traditional Goan cuisine was conspicuously absent from their menus. The government has now decided to mandate the inclusion of local dishes such as fish curry-rice on shack menus. Minister Khaunte emphasised on the importance of projecting Goa’s rich culinary heritage to tourists visiting this vibrant coastal paradise.

Addressing Illegal Hawking

Beyond promoting local cuisine, Goa’s new Shack Policy also aims at addressing illegal hawking and vending activities plaguing its pristine beaches. According to Minister Khaunte, many women involved in unauthorized selling activities often masquerade as employees of these shacks when confronted by officials from the tourism department. To curb this menace, it has been mandated under the new policy that each beach shack must submit a list of its employees.

Fish Curry-Rice: A Taste Of Authentic Goan Cuisine

Fish curry-rice is not just a dish; it is synonymous with Goan culture and lifestyle - simple yet full-bodied and teeming with flavours. The coconut-based preparation beloved for its tangy-spicy taste serves as an excellent introduction for tourists into authentic Goan cuisine which combines influences from Hindu origins and four centuries of Portuguese colonialism.

Conclusion

The compulsory inclusion of fish curry-rice and other Goan dishes in the menu of beach shacks is a commendable step by the government towards promoting local culture. This move will not only provide tourists with an authentic taste of Goa's rich culinary heritage but also contribute to preserving and propagating indigenous food traditions. The new Shack Policy, which was recently passed by the cabinet, is an excellent initiative that aims at enhancing tourist experiences while tackling issues like illegal hawking on beaches. It seems poised to transform Goa’s tourism landscape by merging cultural promotion with regulatory measures.
