Exhibition of Karl Müller's Lithographs Opens in Delhi, Showcasing Ordinary Lives
A unique exhibition showcasing a collection of old lithographs by German artist Karl Erich Muller, which vividly captures the daily lives of people, commenced this Wednesday. These 20 lithographs, drawn from the archives of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA), are part of the exhibition titled "People and Places of India-A Retrospect". This event is organized to commemorate International Labour Day, as announced by the Ministry of Culture.

The exhibition, hosted by the Conservation and Archives Division of the IGNCA, has been curated to highlight the ordinary yet profound aspects of life through Muller's eyes. Sachchidanand Joshi, IGNCA Member Secretary, in his address, pointed out the unique and rare qualities of these lithographs. He emphasized their ability to convey deep messages about life's simplicity and beauty without the need for abundant resources.
Dattatraya Apte, a renowned artist in lithography and printmaking, graced the event as the guest of honour. He shared insights into Muller's work, describing the lithographs as a reflection of the artist's keen observations and deep understanding of society during his time. Apte highlighted how Muller's art serves as a historical archive, offering a window into the societal norms and daily routines of his era.
The exhibition not only showcases Muller's artistic prowess but also sheds light on his personal journey and experiences. Influenced by socialism, Muller's art is a testament to his engagement with the socio-political challenges of his time. His ability to transform personal experiences into compelling artistic narratives was particularly noted by Apte during the event.
This exhibition offers an opportunity for art enthusiasts and historians alike to delve into the world of Karl Erich Muller. Through his lithographs, visitors can explore the essence of ordinary lives from a bygone era, providing a poignant reminder of the universal nature of human experiences across time.
