On Monday there was a fresh demand made to nab the killers of Gauri Lankesh. Gauri's brother Indrajit Lankesh demanded that the probe by the Special Investigation Team is going nowhere and hence the CBI must come into the picture.

Her sister Kavita Lankesh however said that she was satisfied with the SIT probe and they were being regularly updated about the progress.

The status of the case as it stands today is that the accused person has been identified. An officer associated with the probe informed that he belongs to a neighbouring state and had fled to his home town immediately after the incident. A man hunt has been launched for him and we are confident that he would be nabbed soon, the officer also said.

The SIT said that there were some issues pending following which they would reveal the identity of the accused and also the state he hails from. The current status of the accused is that he is on the run.

The SIT has also managed to conclude that the the accused persons although from a different state relied on three persons in Bengaluru for the logistics. He remained in constant touch with these three persons who are locals and this was ascertained through the CDR or Call Detail Records.

The accused person who shot at Gauri had made several calls on the day of the incident as well a few days prior to the murder. We had gone through several thousand CDRs before we were able to conclude that he was making calls seeking logistic support.

On the day of the incident, the accused person had personally surveyed the crime site several times. He was getting instructions from his local contacts about the same, the probe has also revealed.

When the officer was asked about the motive, he said that it would not be possible to reveal that. That would become clear once we nab the accused. We have provided out counterparts with the required details about the accused and are in touch with them to ensure that he is nabbed.

In the run up to cracking the case, the SIT had examined several thousand hours of footage apart from analysing the CDRs. The statements of eye-witness accounts too were recorded, but the case could be cracked due to the scientific and forensic evidence.
